The victim, whose name was not released, is the teen son of a gun show vendor.

He was shot once in the leg about 11:45 a.m., Oklahoma City police Sgt. Charles Phillips said.
The teen's father produced a personally-owned weapon for sale, but a bullet was still in the chamber when it was handed to a potential buyer, Phillips said.

He said two off-duty Oklahoma City police officers were at the doors making sure guns are unloaded and properly marked, but they do not check guns held or being sold by vendors. Guns that are on sale should be "strapped and tagged," or set not to fire for safety purposes during the show, but there is no law requiring it, Phillips said.

Police are considering the shooting to be accidental, and no arrests are expected.

I am kind of in love with this story. I personally believe it is a right to own a gun and if treated with respect and handled correctly, guns are safe. I believe if you own a gun and have children it should be locked up. I don't think you should keep the gun a secret from your children, but teach them gun safety and that guns are not toys. I absolutely love that the person who was shot was the gun vendors son because HE FORGOT to unload the gun. He went on a very comedic rant about how "it's just going to die soon," "It's mother left him" "I had no knowledge of raising a bird" and so on. He even made a comment about how I'd get all attached and because I'd give it a name like Roger and be upset when it died. So that is how the little guy got his name. Roger was around for a few more hours and I realized what tough work raising a baby bird would be (mainly because I had no idea how) so we placed him back in the tree away from predators. I like to believe he flew away somewhere and became the most wonderful father. For the first few weeks after "he left" I would ask my dad whenever he said the prayer to say a special little prayer for Roger. My days of rescuing birds or any animals are over. They keep dying and it's just not fun.

Sweet little Ella

<span style="color: #ea9999; Meg was checked in and checked out only to find that yes she was having consistent, hard, labor pains, but no she was not progressing. The admitted her for the night to see if she would progress on her own and to watch her. She had hopes of being induced in the AM (a Dr told them that was the plan) only to find out the state of Washington won't induce until the mom is 39 weeks along. Meg had like 4 days... This picture was taken right after she was told that they were sending her home....again...no baby. She is trying to look so brave and OK, but as you can see a Popsicle can only do so much.

My mother was able to fly in on Tuesday and surprise Megan and Kevin. She has been able to help around the house and share in the last bits of Meg's pregnancy. This story does have a happy ending or a promise of one, Meg is at the hospital right now and they have promised her that in the morning they are going to induce. As much as we wanted Tripp to be born last week I am kind of excited...I am no longer going to be the only June birthday. We will only be 3 days apart. "I'm having hard contractions every 3 minutes. I'm headed to the hospital to see if I am in labor." We were all so excited, pumped, nervous, you get the drift. She called me to let me know she was on the way to the hospital and I over heard her snap at Kevin. Her sweet little husband was trying to make a memory by turning up the song that they were "driving to the hospital to" and all she wanted was for it to be turned off. I have never heard her whimper or be in so much pain. After I hung up I told my mom and we giggled a bit, but then knelt to pray and ask for Megan, Tripp and Kevin to be safe and protected. Every year at this time my family will bring flowers to Vivian his mother. We love her, we loved him. I went to Deer Creek today to bring flowers so Ben could take them to his mom and I took a moment to reflect at the bench in his honor. I took a moment to reflect what kind of a person he was and just how amazing he made everyone feel. He was funny, kind, fearless, a champion, a believer in Christ, talented, handsome and so special. I love you Johnathan. I would like to share with the world why I love him so dang much.

He is the hardest working man I know.

He has the BEST sense of humor and loves to laugh.

He instilled in me my love for reading. I remember my entire family laying on my parents bed while my father would read to us. I still hear his voice when I read In Search of Steenie Bergman.

He has ALWAYS ended every phone call, letter, email, text or conversation with I love you, or with our family favorite 8.

When I was a little girl he would take me on "Daddy Daughter Dates". He would usually send me a bouquet of daises with a little note asking me to dinner. My mom would buy me a new outfit usually, a blouse and skirt with sandals (because "Mom, Ladies wear skirts and blouses with sandals"). My mom would fix my hair and I would get to wear lip gloss. He would ring the doorbell and would whisk me away to the fanciest restaurant around, my choice...McDonald's.

He has always given me the best advice when I have had to make the tough decisions. We sat and talked for hours when I was trying to make the decision to serve a mission and again when I was trying to decide if I should get married. He has never once forced his opinions on me. He always let me know where he stood on an issue, but he has let me make the decision. Succeed or fail has been there jumping for joy or crying along with me.

He cries...a lot. He cries at movies, songs, books, the successes and failures his children have. He isn't ashamed. He has taught me that real men cry.

He loves my mom and has been married to her for 32 years. It was important to both of my parents that they were married in the Temple setting that example to my brothers, sister and I. Like all married couples they have had ups and downs, but they have made a decision to stay together and work things out. Showing us to never give up.

He has AMAZING taste in jewelry!

He honors his Priesthood. He has always been willing and worthy to give me a fathers blessing. He has said to his children, "If you need a blessing no matter where you are I will come to you." In whatever calling he has had in church be it Bishop, Elders Quorum President, Sunday School teacher, or Primary Teacher he listens to the Spirit and magnifies that calling.

He prays. I have seen him when he didn't know I was watching. I know that he has prayed countless hours to our Father in Heaven for me and for my family.

He and my mother have given me a voice. I am a very stubborn and independent person. I have never been afraid to tell my parents of the "injustices they have put me through" I have cried, screamed, yelled and stomped my feet. I have said horrible things, and they still love me. I am not afraid to stand up to myself today (I don't stomp my feet or scream obscenities anymore)

He can fix anything!

He instilled in me a love for good music. I grew up listening to Billy Joel, Heart, The Eagles and other wonderful artists.

He has the most beautiful voice. I remember sitting around the living room listening to my dad play his guitar. I find myself singing the song he wrote for me when I was born.

I could go on and on about how special my dad is and what he means to me, but those of you who know him already know. Those that don't, well I don't want to make you jealous. He is loved my many and I know he has changed countless lives. He is known to others as Jerry, friend, brother, husband, and grandpa, but he will always and forever be my favorite cookie with mustard on it.
8

"Today I am HUGE!"

April 11th,2010

Meggie sent me this pic Sunday. Bailey then walked to the Oklahoma County jail, where he walked in with a tree branch he claimed was the last tree in the universe and tried to use the stick to pay for charges to be dropped.

A reserve deputy told Bailey the county didn't accept trees as payment and Bailey walked outside, picked up a landscaping brick and broke a window on the east side of the jail lobby.

Bailey went across the street to the U.S. Marshals office, then back to his truck where he was arrested, Myers said. Deputies found a baggie containing a white, powdery substance believed to be methamphetamines.

Bailey was taken in on complaints of destruction of property and possession of a controlled and dangerous substance inside a penal institution.

Read more: http://newsok.com/tree-branch-even-the-last-tree-in-the-universe-not-legal-tender-at-oklahoma-county-jail/article/3444999#ixzz0iz7LmBJb

The most handsome fetus I have ever seen

He is absolutely ADORABLE!

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I HATE going to the dentist! I am afraid of needles, pain, my teeth falling out, drilling, the smells, the noises, the gritty toothpaste they use when they clean your teeth, and now the Chupacabra. Yes you did read that right THE CHUPACABRA. My knowledge of this mythical creature is soley based on theThe X-Files epsiode, El Mundo Gira. I have done a little more research on the subject this week after my dental visit. Below is a little information on the Chupacabra.

The Chupacabra or Chupacabras (pronunciation: /tʃupa'kabɾa/, from the Spanish words chupar, meaning "to suck", and cabra, meaning "goat"; literally "goat sucker"), also called El Chupacabras in Spanish, is a legendary cryptid rumored to inhabit parts of the Americas. It is associated more recently with sightings of an allegedly unknown animal in Puerto Rico (where these sightings were first reported), Mexico, and the United States, especially in the latter's Latin American communities.[1] The name comes from the animal's reported habit of attacking and drinking the blood of livestock, especially goats. Physical descriptions of the creature vary. Eyewitness sightings have been claimed as early as 1990 in Puerto Rico, and have since been reported as far north as Maine, and as far south as Chile. It is supposedly a heavy creature, the size of a small bear, with a row of spines reaching from the neck to the base of the tail. Biologists and wildlife management officials view the Chupacabra as a contemporary legend

I am sure you are asking why my recent dental visit instilled in me a fear of El Chupacabra. While I was laying back in the chair, hooked up to the gas the dental assistant TEMP decided to make small talk with the Dr and I. Lately she has really gotten into TV show's like I Should't Be Alive, and I Survived. She also is a fan of the Animal Planet and their show Lost Tapes: Paranormal Creatures. She told me of a segment they did on the Chupacabra and how she believes it exists. She told me of it's eating habits and how it punctures your jugular and sucks you dry. Your body is left untouched and fine other than the three puncture wounds. While she was telling me this (multiple times) she would take her three fingers and jab, jab, jab at my neck. She also told me another story of The Oklahoma Octopus and how a group of students went camping and only two made it out alive, but all the deaths are caught on tape....blah blah blah. She FINALLY left after I asked her how many Faces of Death dvd's she owns. FYI...she claims none, but I'm sure that's a lie. All I could do was lay there thinking if the dentist doesn't kill me the Chupacabra or Oklahoma Octopus will. In the future I plan on asking them not to put me with her (if she ever temps there again). I made it through the dentist with flying colors thanks to a wonderful dentist, LOTS of gas, my ipod, prayer and did I mention the gas? I go back next week for one last filling. Pretty much I have an amazing life....I couldn't make this stuff up folks.

The Oklahoma Octopus....cause I know you want to know.

A FRESHWATER MONSTER? The Oklahoma Octopus is a mysterious creature generally said to inhabit three lakes in Oklahoma (Lake Thunderbird, Lake Oolagah and Lake Tenkiller) where it attacks and kills unsuspecting swimmers. According to legend and rumor, this freshwater demon measures the size of a horse and resembles an octopus, with long tentacles and leathery, reddish-brown skin. Skeptics question how an octopus — an ocean creature — could survive in freshwater lakes, but it is easy to believe that such a creature would be a fearsome predator. The Giant Pacific Octopus, for example, has tentacles that each boast the strength of a 200-pound man and a powerful beak that it uses to kill prey. EVIDENCE OF AN OCTOPUS? Although no physical evidence exists in the case of the Oklahoma Octopus, many point to the high mortality rate and large number of unexplained drownings in the Oklahoma lakes as a clear sign of its presence. There have also been numerous reported sightings. Cryptozoologists have pointed out that species of jellyfish have been able to adapt from saltwater to freshwater conditions, and the same adaptation may have been possible for a giant cephalopod trapped in an inland lake when coastal waters receded.

Book of Mormon Stories...

I have had the most amazing two weeks. I still have the same crazy people who come into work, I'm still a horrible driver, still crazy tired all the time, and pretty much the same person living the same life day by day...except I started to read the Book of Mormon again. Being a Returned Missionary, and life long member of the Church, I know the power that little blue book carries. I just seem to forget sometimes. I work nights and there are days where I have a lot of downtime. I decided to put that time to good use. I began reading, A LOT. While on my mission one of my companions was told about a cool idea. It is based on 1st Nephi: 22-23

22 Now it came to pass that I, Nephi, did teach my brethren these things; and it came to pass that I did read many things to them, which were engraven upon the plates of brass, (1)that they might know concerning the doings of the Lord in other lands, among people of old.

23 And I did read many things unto them which were written in the books of Moses; but that (2)I might more fully persuade them to believe in the Lord their Redeemer I did read unto them that which was written by the prophet Isaiah; for (3)I did liken all scriptures unto us, that it might be for our profit and learning.

The first time you read it through take a black ink pen, or pencil and underline all the information that pertains to daily life. For example: money, housing, animals, description of the cities and so on. It's so neat to look at the differences and similarities between then and now. People act the same way today in many cases as they did then. They had a legal system with judges and lawyers. They loved and hated their brothers. They had good and bad people. They had homes and families. There were millions of people who lived. I have always had the hardest time wrapping my mind around "how big" it all was. I always see them as the first few people who left Jerusalem and not the bigger picture. Learning how people lived, what they ate and the number of cities and people puts it into a whole different light that I have not been able see the other times I have read it. I also think reading it like a book from beginning to end in a week has a lot to do with that.

The second time you read it take a blue ink pen or pencil, and underline all the wars and fights. I have also been keeping a record of the pride cycles the people go through. It's amazing how fast one can go from being so evil to a person called of God to preach the Gospel. It's also pretty interesting to see the opposite. Someone who was raised knowing the truth believing in Christ and then actively hunting down and killing people who are members of the Church.

The third time you read it take a red ink pen or pencil, and underline all the times where it mentions Christ and the Atonement. For most of the book the people practice the Law of Moses, It is so neat to see how everything testifies of Christ. Just like then we are waiting for the Savior to come, only we are waiting for Him to come again... We believe He has been here, and that He died for our sins. We like the Nephites have had and continue to have Prophets testify of this. We just as those who came before us have been mocked and persecuted for our beliefs. I am sure that many wonder when and if He will come. The Book of Mormon testifies that He has and just as important that He will again.

I have had the most amazing experience reading the Book of Mormon this way. I believe it is so important to ponder and study the scriptures, but I also think that reading like this is pretty amazing. So far it has taken me a week give or take a day to read it in each specific color. I am almost finished reading it the second time and I honestly can't wait to start it again. Each time I read it I learn new and amazing things that I missed the time before. I know that many don't have hours to spend reading the scriptures like I do, and that a week is not possible for most, but try reading it through in a month. I promise you will be amazed what you will learn and how you will feel about people who lived thousands of years ago. My testimony of the scriptures, and in Christ has grown so much in two weeks. I didn't think it was possible to "grow" like this outside of my mission. I am thankful for this opportunity I have to devour the Book of Mormon. I am blessed, I am loved, I am thankful.

It's an obsession and I am seeking help...

So I have added another blog to my list. It's called Book of Mormon stories...clever I know. My next post will explain why and how this idea came to be. Follow me as I journey through the Book of Mormon. I HATE everything there is to a fever. The chills, the aches, my toes so sore I fear I will never be able to wear shoes again, sweating, and just plain being miserable. I have had major surgeries during my 31 years of life and I am pretty much a champ when I comes to pain, I don't love it, but I know it will pass. I know that rest and dilaudid...yes the hard stuff I'm allergic to everything else, will do the trick and the physical pain I feel will pass. Not so much with a fever. There is that moment when it is at it highest where I am sure without a doubt I will die. A painful, tragic and pathetic death. I know if by some chance I survive the fever I will be left scarred by blindness, deafness or I will be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of my life. What makes this all the worse, is that nobody feels sympathy for someone who has a fever. I frequently hear, "Suck it up," or my favorite "Get up off the kitchen floor." Today I got up off the kitchen floor, sucked it up and came to work. I know right I'm a carrier monkey...I sanitize my hands frequently and don't touch the patients.

I hate working when I feel more like a patient than some of the people who walk in the doors. I am a tough cookie and rarely cry, unless I am sick and then it's a freaking tear fest! All the little old people who come from nursing homes with no families, the sick little babies who have no fight in them, or the families who are here with a loved one and scared to death make me just want to curl up and cry. There is also a second side to this sick coin, I have no patience for bull crap. If you are looking for drugs, are drunk, or come in for the tooth ache that you have had for six months and tonight at 4am is an emergency....you get no sympathy. It's just not there. You can't squeeze blood from a turnip so don't even try.

All and all it's not been that bad. I am thankful for a body that knows pain for without pain I wouldn't know how good it feels to feel good. I am thankful for a job that gives me insurance, money in my pocket, food in my pantry and a roof over my head. Thankful for friends I work with who care for my well being and check up on me. One of the nurses gave me something to help bring down the fever and help with the aches. I have the next couple of days off so I should be able to rest and revive myself. The fever has gone down, but I suspect any minute I will spike and I will collapse. Thankfully I am in an Emergency Room....

It's like crack...but better for you.

not actual picture*

I am sure you know by now how much I love to cook. I was a vegetarian for a while (before I moved to Crescent and my Doctor and lack of meat free dishes changed that). I also have dabbled in the art of eating completely animal free ...I couldn't do it for long I LOVE cheese, but I picked up a few things along the way. Believe me my 18 year old brother and friend loved these cupcakes and my father said it was the BEST coconut pecan frosting he has ever eaten. Give it a try you never know how much you'll like something until you try it. My mother also pointed out this is a perfect treat for people who don't have access to dairy or for a delish food storage dessert. My family is hooked...

The Best Vegan Chocolate Cake Ever

3 cups flour

2 cups sugar

1/2 cup cocoa (I usually add a little more for a richer flavor)

2 teaspoons baking soda

2 teaspoons salt

2 tablespoons white vinegar

3/4 cup oil

2 teaspoons vanilla

2 cups cold water

Directions: Preheat oven to 350. In a large mixing bowl or mixer (use the batter attachment) combine dry ingredients. Stir in oil, vinegar and vanilla mix until it's a paste. Slowly stir in the water a cup at a time. It won't seem like it can take that much, just keep stirring. After all liquid is incorporated stir or mix for a minute or so more. Bake at 350 until the middle of the cake is springy to the touch or a knife inserted into the middle comes out clean. Immediately turn out and wrap with plastic wrap. This keeps the cake super moist. Let cool to room temperature before frosting.

This makes a little over 2 dozen cupcakes, one bunt cake, or two 9" rounds. Be sure to adjust the baking time.

This goes great with a coconut pecan frosting, which is listed below. This is by far the best vegan cake recipe I have found, and I've been looking!

Preparation time: 50 minutes

Coconut Pecan Frosting

1 stick margarine (1/2 cup)

3/4 cup sugar

1 1/2 cup shredded coconut

1 cup chopped pecans

1/2 cup soy milk

1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions: Boil together all ingredients in a medium to large saucepan over medium-high heat for 8-12 minutes, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon. Pour then spread on cake while frosting is still warm. Let set up for a few minutes before serving (sets up faster if you cover it and place it in the fridge).

Serves: enough for one 2-layer cake, or 24 cupcakes

Preparation time: 15 minutes

Meggo is Preggo!

I am sure that by now most if not all of you have heard I am going to be an aunt for the very first time! My sweet sister Megan is having a baby and I couldn't be more excited...well maybe when it's my turn.... She and Kevin are living in Tacoma, WA and Meg has been super with keeping us updated on the goings on in her growing belly.

This is the first picture of my niece
October 30, 2009

From the time we found out Megan was going to be a mom, everybody knew she was going to have Ava Carey Nickel. I bought Ava her first pair of shoes, the cutest little pink maryjanes. We were so blessed to have Meg and Kev home for Christmas and we had the funnest time planning for sweet little Ava. Meg had "the" ultrasound to find out for sure who she was carrying in the beginning of January. They had the funnest party where they asked everyone to come dressed in pink or blue depending on who you felt she was having. It was a sea of pink with the exception of a few blue hopeful men. During the party cupcakes were given out with pink or blue frosting in the middle so when you bit into it you were able to find out who she is having. With my parents on the phone everyone at the party bit into the cupcake to find.....BLUE!!
She is having Kevin Russel Nickel III or as we so lovingly call him Tripp.

Tripps foot

Below is the progression of her growing belly

January 24, 2010

For the longest time she wasn't quite showing. It actually works out very nice, I have my space my parents have theirs and we respect each others. There are a few perks IE: my mom loves to do laundry, my dad will take out the trash for me on trash day, no rent, a garden, and dinner invites. With that being said this Saturday I was tinkering around in my room when I heard my backdoor open. Then I heard the water running in the bathroom, so I walked out into the hall to find my father face down in the sink with blood pouring down his face as he says "I think I broke my nose." Me being the calm ER employee look at him and say I don't think your nose is broken, but you are going to need stitches for that lip. Go home and shower, I will meet you there in ten minutes. I got into the shower, got ready at the speed of light and called my mother who was already aware of the situation and was on her way home to access his injury.

He was working in the garden and pushed the trashcan away from him...it slipped and he fell face first in to this

Why yes those are jagged pieces of wood and sharp rusty tomato spikes. He was very lucky to not loose an eye. Something we discussed in detail as I drove him to the hospital. The conversation goes a little something like this:
Dad "It could have been so much worse!"
Me "I know, you could have lost your eye."
Dad "Easily, I was very lucky and blessed."
Me "Yeah you were. You could have lost your eye, and you know how I feel about people who are missing body parts" (as I lean over and pat his leg I say) "God sure was looking out for me."

I thought it was hilarious as did he. He didn't loose an eye, but this is what he ended up with

After four hours in the Emergency Room, one tetanus shot, three magazines, one book Twilight (his not mine, I know right. The time when he rescued Meg and I from the dead mice in our apartment. He was the bravest nine year old I had ever known. Meg and I cheered him on while he cried and laughed the entire way to the trashcan. He is a senior this year and is officially old enough to put in his mission papers. I can't believe that my little peanut is a man. He is a good student, a true friend, caring, loving, talented, Christ like, funny, witty, and still just as brave. I love the relationship he and I have now that we are both adults, we laugh all the time. I am forever thankful for the grownup conversations we have shared. Thankful for the little brother that is willing to "beat up" anyone who hurts me. He helped me through my recent failed engagement with wisdom and clarity of the Spirit. I love him and am so excited for him to put in those papers, however dificult it will be to miss him. He is and always be my Peanut.

Everybody else is doing it.....

All...well most of my friends have thes blogs.
